About Pieter Rombouts

Baptised in 1667. His mother Sibilia Barendtz, widow of Jan Rombouts,remarried the viol maker Hendrik Jacobs. Jacobs became not only his stepfather but also his master and employer.Rombouts took over the workshop following Jacobs’ death in 1704. In 1706 he married Magdalena Kruijskerck. The large dowry she brought to the marriage ensured that the couple never experienced financial problems. (When Rombouts’ widow Magdelena died in 1750, her fortune was estimated to be 53,133 florins (25,000 euros). Pieter Rombouts was buried on 27 September 1728. (Note: according to Rene Vannes’ ‘Dictionnaire Universel des Luthiers’ he died in 1749, whilst Henley states 1740).
